Deuba Highlights Girija Prasad Koirala’s Role in Establishing Federal Democratic Republic

Nepali Congress (NC) President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba lauded the late Girija Prasad Koirala's pivotal role in establishing the federal democratic republic in Nepal.
Speaking at a programme organized by the Jaya Nepal International Foundation to mark the 102nd birth anniversary of the late Koirala, Deuba emphasized that future generations must remember Koirala’s instrumental contributions in transforming Nepal into a republic.
“The nation would not have attained the republican system without Girijababu’s leadership. He boldly led the country toward republicanism by garnering widespread public support,” Deuba said.
He remarked that the country is now on the path of socio-economic transformation by strengthening the hard-earned republican system. However, he acknowledged the presence of certain systemic challenges that must be addressed gradually.
Deuba also praised the inclusive nature of the current political system, noting it has ensured representation of all classes, regions, and communities in state mechanisms. He urged all political parties to work collectively to deliver the benefits of the republic by fostering an enabling economic environment.
Also addressing the event, senior NC leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala stressed that the Nepali Congress, which has led major political changes in the country, must now spearhead the drive for social and economic transformation.
“The NC played a leading role in ending the Panchayat system, abolishing the monarchy, and drafting the Constitution. Now, it must lead the nation toward prosperity by effectively implementing the Constitution,” Koirala stated.
He also proposed developing strategic plans focused on green energy, modern agriculture, improved livestock breeding, and technological integration in farming. Additionally, he emphasized the need to promote religious, cultural, spiritual, and adventure tourism to accelerate national development.
Minister for Youth and Sports Tejulal Chaudhary and NC Assistant General Secretary Mahalaxmi Upadhyay also spoke on the occasion.
According to Foundation President Badri Aryal, President Deuba honoured winners of the Free Student Union (FSU) elections and Nepali athletes who have achieved success in international competitions during the programme.
