Nepal Geological Society Announces International Himalayan Geoscience Conference
Kathmandu: The Nepal Geological Society (NGS) has officially announced the organization of the 12th Nepal Geological Conference (NGC–XII, 2026), an internationally recognized event focused on Himalayan Geology and mountain geoscience systems.
According to the Society, the three-day conference will be held in Kathmandu from November 19 to 21, 2026 (corresponding to Mangsir 3–5, 2083 BS). The conference will be organized under the theme “Promoting Himalayan Geoscience for a Resilient, Sustainable, and Resource-Secure World.” It aims to connect Himalayan-focused geoscientific research with global scientific discourse and policy dialogue.
The Nepal Geological Conference has been organized regularly for nearly three decades and has emerged as one of the most influential and continuous scientific platforms dedicated to Himalayan geoscience. Since hosting its first conference around 30 years ago, the Nepal Geological Society has consistently organized national and international forums to advance research and collaboration in the field.
The upcoming 12th edition of the conference seeks to bring together renowned geoscientists, engineers, researchers, policymakers, development professionals, and students from Nepal and abroad onto a single shared platform. With the objective of elevating the conference to a higher international standard, the organizers have invited more than 400 experts from around the world to participate in the Kathmandu event.
NGS President Bhaskar Khatiwada stated that the Himalayas represent one of the most dynamic geological regions on Earth. He expressed confidence that the conference would play a decisive role in promoting safe infrastructure development, sustainable resource management, and disaster risk reduction. He also emphasized that the conference would serve as an important opportunity to link scientific knowledge with practical policy-making and development practices.
Similarly, Conference Coordinator Dr. Anant Man Singh Pradhan said the event is not intended to be limited to purely academic discussions. Instead, it aims to function as a hub for interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. He added that hosting the conference in Kathmandu a city of historical and geological significance would contribute to shaping the future direction of Himalayan geoscience.
Objectives of the Conference
The primary objective of the conference is to establish the Nepal Geological Conference as a leading global platform for Himalayan and mountain geoscience. The conference will feature the latest research on topics such as Himalayan geology, tectonics, natural hazards, water resources, mineral and energy resources, climate change, and digital geoscience.
In addition, the event aims to strengthen dialogue between scientists and policymakers and to inspire the next generation of geoscientists to pursue research and innovation in the field.
The Nepal Geological Society expects the conference to serve as a global forum for discussing shared challenges and solutions in Himalayan regions. Highlighting the growing risks from natural hazards, the Society stressed the urgent need to translate scientific knowledge into policy and practice. It has therefore extended an open invitation to national and international geoscientists, researchers, students, policymakers, and other stakeholders to actively participate in this landmark conference.
