YouTube Brings AI-Powered ‘Super Resolution’ to Enhance Video Quality

YouTube has introduced a range of new AI features in recent months, and one of the most significant updates will soon impact video quality across the platform. The company is preparing to use artificial intelligence to automatically upscale video quality for mobile viewers, with the rollout expected in the coming weeks.

The platform aims to enable upscaling up to 4K resolution, though the initial focus will be on improving standard-definition (SD) videos. YouTube is calling this new enhancement “Super Resolution”, which activates when the AI model detects low-quality footage and automatically enhances it for viewers.

According to YouTube, if a video’s resolution is below 1080p, the system will use AI to generate a higher-quality version. The long-term goal is to upscale videos to 4K resolution, and enhanced videos will be labeled with the “Super Resolution” tag for transparency.

Initially, YouTube will apply this feature to older videos uploaded below 1080p quality effectively allowing users to experience upscaling from SD to HD. While the AI handles this process automatically, creators and viewers will retain the option to opt out. YouTube assures that original uploads will remain accessible to creators in their original quality and that viewers can still choose to watch the unaltered version.

For users, the improved videos will display a special “Super Resolution” label, indicating that AI enhancement has been applied.

In addition to these updates, YouTube is also deepening its integration with Shorts content. The platform has partnered with Adobe to make it easier for creators to edit short-form videos using tools like Premiere Pro. The collaboration, announced during an Adobe event in California this week, also includes support for Apple’s iPhone app for Adobe’s editing suite.

Since many creators shoot and edit their Shorts using iPhones, Adobe is making its Premiere iOS app compatible with YouTube Shorts, allowing users to trim, cut, and edit videos seamlessly without switching between multiple apps.

With this partnership, YouTube aims to make short-form content creation smoother, keeping pace with rivals like Instagram Reels and TikTok, which continue to dominate the vertical video space.
