Finance Committee Members Demand Transparency on USAID Expenditures in Nepal

Members of the Finance Committee under the House of Representatives have called for the government to disclose the details of expenditures under USAID programmes in Nepal.

Lawmaker Ganga Karki raised concerns at today’s Committee meeting, stressing the need for transparency, especially in light of US President Donald Trump's allegations of 'fraud' in the aid implementation. Karki pointed out that, through unofficial channels, it was reported that the funds were allocated via the Natural Resources and Finance Commission, and it is this Commission that should clarify the expenditure details.

Gyanendra Bahadur Karki also sought clarification on the context in which President Trump referred to 'fraud', highlighting that the US-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact was signed during his tenure as Finance Minister and was later approved by the parliament. He emphasized the importance of concluding the bills currently under discussion in the Finance Committee.

Meanwhile, Surya Bahadur Thapa Chhetri expressed that the issue raised by the US President should be addressed in the House of Representatives, as it is a parliamentary matter, rather than being discussed in the Committee. He suggested that the Ministry of Finance could provide the necessary details regarding USAID expenditures. Chhetri also pointed out that the Committee’s discussions often stray from the agenda, which weakens its effectiveness, and that the meeting's commencement frequently exceeds the set timeline.
