Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza "Beyond Imagination: UN Agency

Gaza, May 4 — The humanitarian situation across the Gaza Strip has reached a level "beyond imagination," the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) warned on Sunday, as the total blockade on vital supplies enters its ninth consecutive week.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), UNRWA emphasized the urgent need for a global response, calling for a coordinated international effort to prevent the already dire conditions from worsening further. The agency renewed its appeal for an immediate ceasefire to allow life-saving aid to reach civilians trapped in the conflict zone.

At the same time, the media office of the Hamas-led Gaza administration issued a grim warning, stating that the continued closure of crossings and more than 60 days of blockade have pushed the region to the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe.

According to a press release from the office, the Israeli blockade is preventing the entry of critical supplies, including baby formula and nutritional supplements. As a result, over 70,000 children are currently hospitalized due to severe malnutrition, and more than 3,500 children under the age of five are reported to be at imminent risk of starvation-related death.

The Hamas-run office called on the international community to act immediately to reopen border crossings and ensure the urgent delivery of food and medical supplies, especially for infants and children.

Israel halted the flow of goods into Gaza on March 2, following the expiration of the first phase of a ceasefire agreement reached in January. The second phase of the deal has not yet been implemented due to ongoing disagreements between the involved parties.
