Central Texas Flooding Kills 25, Dozens Still Missing Including Summer Camp Girls

At least 25 people have been confirmed dead and more than two dozen girls remain missing following devastating flash floods that swept through central Texas on Friday, authorities confirmed.
Among the missing are 23 to 25 girls attending Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp for girls located along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County. The camp, which typically hosts around 750 children each summer, was hit hard by sudden flooding that overwhelmed the region.
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed at a Friday night press briefing that 24 deaths occurred in Kerr County, with one additional fatality reported in neighboring Kendall County. Search and rescue teams are continuing to look for the missing girls, many of whom were last seen near the riverside campgrounds.
The total number of missing remains uncertain. Locals have taken to social media, particularly the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, to post photos of missing loved ones and request assistance.
Dramatic video footage from the scene showed vehicles, campers, and mobile homes being swept away as the Guadalupe River burst its banks, submerging parts of the scenic Texas Hill Country. Several bodies were recovered from vehicles that had been carried downstream.
The Houston Chronicle reports that while Camp Mystic was significantly affected, no other summer camps along the Guadalupe River have reported missing campers. Nearly 20 camps in the area have been contacted by state authorities for updates.
Rescue operations are in full force, with 237 people rescued as of Friday night, including 167 by helicopter, according to Major General Thomas Suelzer, Adjutant General of Texas. Emergency teams from across the state, including the National Guard, have been deployed to assist with the search and recovery efforts.
State and local officials are urging residents to avoid flooded areas and cooperate with emergency personnel. The full scope of the disaster is still unfolding as authorities work to account for all missing individuals and assess the damage caused by one of the region’s deadliest flood events in recent memory.
