Plane Crash in South Sudan Claims 20 Lives: State Minister

A plane crash in northern South Sudan has claimed the lives of at least 20 people, according to Unity State’s Minister of Information, Gatwech Bipal Both, speaking on Wednesday.

The aircraft went down near the oil fields in Unity State at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time (0830 GMT), shortly after departing for the capital, Juba.

"The crash occurred just 500 meters from the airport. There were 21 people on board, and only one survivor has been found so far," both told AFP by phone.

The plane, chartered by the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC) and operated by Light Air Services Aviation, was on a routine mission.

Expressing grief, the minister stated, "The state government is deeply saddened by this tragedy. An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause."

He added that early speculation pointed to a possible mechanical failure.

South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011, continues to struggle with limited transport infrastructure. Air crashes in the country are often attributed to overloading and adverse weather conditions.
