Music Was the Soundtrack of Nepal’s Social Change - Minister Pant

Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Raghuji Pant has emphasized the powerful role songs and music have played in driving political and social transformations in Nepal.

Speaking at an award distribution ceremony organized by Sahitya Sadan Nepal in Ramhiti today, Minister Pant reflected on the historical influence of music in propelling democratic movements across the country. He highlighted how songs served as a catalyst in mobilizing people during various political struggles, including the fight for democracy.

He also stressed the importance of further academic study into how music influences everyday life and societal development. Pant noted the significant impact of songs in nurturing communist movements across South Asia and recalled their powerful presence during Nepal’s decade-long Maoist conflict.

Addressing the gathering, President of the Finance Committee under the House of Representatives, Santosh Chalise, remarked on the rich literary and cultural heritage of Kathmandu’s north-eastern region. He shared his initiatives in promoting religion, culture, and literature during his tenure as mayor of Gokarneshwor Municipality.

The event also featured reflections on the legacy of renowned poet Gopal Prasad Rimal. Former Chancellor of the Nepal Academy, Ganga Prasad Upreti, along with other noted literary figures, spoke on Rimal’s profound contributions to Nepali literature and music.

This year’s prestigious Gopal Prasad Rimal Award was conferred upon veteran lyricist and poet Meghraj Sharma Nepal, widely known by his pen name ‘Manjul’.
