Whooping Cough Cases Surge Across Canada

Cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis or the "100-day cough," are rising significantly in several provinces and territories across Canada, local media reported on Friday.
Canadian health officials have recorded 19,000 cases of pertussis so far this year—far exceeding the country’s usual annual range of 1,000 to 3,000 cases, according to CTV News.
Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, highlighted whooping cough as one of her top health concerns heading into 2025. She noted that the disease, once controlled through vaccination, may be resurging due to disruptions in routine childhood immunizations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whooping cough is classified as a "nationally notifiable disease" in Canada, with cases monitored through the Canadian Notifiable Disease Surveillance System, which tracks the spread of infectious diseases nationwide.
