Trump Signs Executive Order to Plan US "Iron Dome" Missile Defense System

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, directing the Pentagon to begin planning for a U.S.-based "Iron Dome" air defense system, similar to the one used by Israel to intercept thousands of incoming rockets.
The order instructs the Secretary of Defense to present a detailed implementation plan within 60 days for a "next-generation missile defense shield" designed to protect against ballistic, hypersonic, and advanced cruise missiles. The plan also includes developing space-based interceptors.
Trump had promised during the 2024 election campaign to create a version of Israel's Iron Dome for the U.S., although the system is designed for short-range threats, which makes it less effective against intercontinental missiles—one of the main risks to the United States.
The executive order highlighted the growing threat from next-generation strategic weapons, noting the development of missile launch capabilities by unnamed adversaries.
While addressing a Republican congressional retreat in Miami, Trump referenced Israel's successful use of the Iron Dome to shoot down rockets fired by Hamas and Hezbollah. "They knock down just about every one of them," Trump said, adding, "I think the United States is entitled to that."
In addition to the Iron Dome plan, Trump signed several other military-related executive orders, including one that would pave the way for a ban on transgender individuals serving in the U.S. armed forces.
